On October 4, 2016, MPower, in cooperation with its Knowledge Partner, Meralco Power Academy (MPA) and Energy Solutions Partner, Meralco Energy Inc. (MSERV), held an Energy Efficiency Partner Forum for over 80 MPower customers at the Marco Polo Ortigas Manila.
Representatives from the Department of Energy (DOE) and United Nations and Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) were in attendance. In his message, Atty. Patrick Aquino, Director of Energy Utilization & Management Bureau of DOE, mentioned that the Philippine government is moving towards promoting energy efficiency in the country
. The DOE and UNIDO established the Philippine Industrial Energy Efficiency Project (PIEEP) to promote sustainable energy management system and energy efficiency best practices in the Philippines.
Certified UNIDO global expert on Energy Management Systems (EnMS) Richard Morrison, who flew in from Ireland for the forum, discussed global perspectives on energy efficiency. Quoting Morrison, “One of the main reasons for doing this is because it is the right thing to do… We absolutely have to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere to help reduce the effects of global warming.”
Besides environmental welfare, energy efficiency allows businesses to reduce operating losses, improve energy performance and return value to shareholders. Interestingly, for companies new to energy management, energy savings during the first 2 years are 10-20%, as per Morrison.
Other UNIDO experts on EnMS Rommel Benig and Eugene Araullo, and UNIDO National Project Coordinator Oscar Malvar, joined Morrison and answered the attendees’ questions regarding EnMS during the Q&A. After this, Benig and Araullo presented a more detailed discussion on the framework, processes and integration of EnMS.
The forum ended with a short message from Meralco’s Senior VP and Head of Human Resources and Head of MPA, Ramon B. Segismundo. According to Segismundo, “We strongly believe that all our customers, all of our ecosystem clients should practice energy efficiency as we continuously upgrade our goals in terms of providing customer satisfaction, better service, higher quality and greater value to all our clients and partners.”
