MPower plants bamboo seedlings to symbolize growing partnership with its customers
December 12, 2015
As part of its initiatives to protect the environment, MPower held a very successful tree planting activity called “CommuniTrees” on December 12, 2015 at Camp Rodriguez in Teresa, Rizal, joined by over 140 volunteer MPower customers, One Meralco Foundation, ALC Foundation and some members of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP).

CommuniTrees is one of MPower’s partnership activities wherein it engages its clients as active participants in community building efforts that both MPower and its customers support. Under this activity, MPower committed to donate 2,000 bamboo seedlings to be planted in different locations within the Meralco franchise area. CommuniTrees, launched during the inaugural MPower Golf Tournament in October 2015, manifests MPower’s growing partnership with its customers.

During the event, MPower acknowledged the participation of its Partners, to wit: Aichi Forging, EHS Lens Phils., Glades International Corp., Ionics EMS, Manila Peninsula, Maynilad, Moldex, Pioneer Highlands (South), PMFTC, Rombe Phils., Terumo, Transitions Optical, and Unilab. MPower also welcomed guests from the local government of Rizal, especially Mayor Raul Palino of Teresa, Rizal, and Governor Rebecca “Nini” Ynares. The latter discussed the impact of global warming and importance of environmental conservation. Thereafter, ALC Foundation Chairman Allan Cristobal and his staff gave an orientation on how to plant the bamboo seedlings properly.

The MPower Partners, along with MPower personnel and the members of the Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP), planted a total of 450 bamboo seedlings throughout the morning event. BSP volunteers also committed to parenting the seedlings to nurture and protect them after the activity. MPower will schedule more CommuniTrees activities in other areas for the remaining bamboo seedlings.

Planting bamboo trees not only prevents soil erosion, but also filters pollution from the air. A bamboo grove releases around 35% more oxygen into the air than a similar-sized stand of trees. It matures and can be replanted within seven years, helping to improve soil conditions along the way. These environmental benefits arise largely out of its ability to grow and spread quickly without the need for fertilizers, pesticides or much water.

The event benefited Mother Nature, and the volunteers who took part in CommuniTrees as well, who felt fulfilled from this simple act which benefitted the environment and the future of next generations.
